Choosing the Right Street Tree: A Walking Tour

Date:
Sunday, March 17, 2019 - 10:00am

Before the March potluck, join Transition Mar Vista/Venice and Pieter Severynen, landscape architect and consulting arborist, to learn why some trees fare better than others in the urban environment. Starting at the UCLA Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden in Westwood, walkers will observe mature trees to see what common species may grow into. Home owners, Pieter says, “are taken by surprise when the cute little nursery specimens turn into unwanted big monsters!” He will discuss where to plant or not to plant certain trees, and offer a primer in tree shape, evergreen and deciduous characteristics, rooting habits, flowering, pruning history, and aging. Pieter will invite walkers to continue the tour on foot through residential Westwood streets to see examples of trees planted in parkways and front yards.
